Join us for an insightful exploration of indie game audio development with Neha Patel, composer and sound designer for the critically acclaimed narrative cooking game Venba. In this conversation with Gameplayarts director Jamin Warren, Patel will take us behind the scenes of her creative process, sharing the challenges and triumphs of bringing authentic South Indian Tamil soundscapes to life in a digital medium.

Venba is a narrative cooking game in which you play as an Indian mom who immigrated to Canada with her family in the 1980s. Players cook various dishes, restore lost recipes, hold branching conversations, and explore this story about family, love, loss, and more.

Patel will discuss her meticulous approach to recording and implementing real cooking sounds, from the sizzle of mustard seeds to the intimidating whistle of a pressure cooker. She'll reveal how personal experiences and cultural memories shaped the audio landscape, creating an immersive experience that resonates with players on an emotional level.

The talk will delve into Patel's innovative solutions for the game's UI and dialogue systems. Attendees will learn about the journey from complex audio experiments to elegantly simple solutions, such as using pencil scribbling sounds to differentiate character voices.

As a junior designer tackling her first professional project, Patel's insights will be helpful for those looking to enhance the audio of their projects. She'll discuss the learning curve, problem-solving strategies, and the importance of documentation and community support in navigating complex audio middleware.

This talk promises to be an inspiring and educational journey through the world of indie game audio. It will offer practical insights and creative inspiration for developers, sound designers, and anyone interested in the art of game creation.
